I’ve been an athlete all my life and avid powerlifter. But about 15 years ago life got in the way and I gained almost 80#. I kept going through my day to day routine telling myself the same old things: I’ll start a new diet tomorrow, I’ll check out that new gym in town TOMMOROW. There were a few futile attempts at weight loss and joining cookie cutter gyms, but the weight came back and gyms were expensive treadmill rentals. In those “regular gyms” there was no personality, no support, and no feeling of community or family.

So I just ended up over the last 5 years not doing anything at all. But at 45 a morbid thought went thru my head – I only have 25 years before I’m the same age as my father when he died. I remember his health deteriorating and him doing NOTHING. I decided that wouldn’t be me. I want to see my son grow get married and I want to see my grand children. Then I got a rude wake up call right around Christmas time when my no-filter mother-in-law came right out and called me fat at the dinner table. Right then I knew, this HAD to change.

So thru friends Joe and Dave I found ATS. I was terrified as to what I had become and wondered if I would be able to do this. Well day one came and my fears were instantly abated when CJ made me instantly feel like a brother. Then the people in that first session made me feel right at home. They were supportive and cheering me on throughout the whole session.

CJ, although half my age, was like a big brother over my shoulder with me the whole way.

“I was done my years in college, and I started packing on bad weight. I lost motivation. Cj found me, and sparked motivation again, but that motivation wasn’t pure. I’ve been working  with CJ for a couple years, and have gained a lot of muscle back, but the fat was still a problem. I still wasn’t eating correctly, and I was still maintaining an unhealthy weight for my body frame. About 6 months ago, I hit an all time high on the scale, weighing in at 207 pounds, and had to start buying 36/38 inch waist pants. This could have gotten me discouraged and I could have lost motivation, but thanks to CJ and the time I had already spent working with him, I did not. He has instilled a fire and passion not only in my life, but all the people that train at ATS. Once I was able to take hold of my diet, the pounds dropped incredibly fast. In the past 6 months, I’ve gone from 207 pounds to a fluctuating 180 pounds and while I’m still dropping fat, my strength has dramatically increased. 

ATS is a brotherhood. We don’t just lift together, we do life together. We have each others back when we need help, we hang out all the time. ATS has grown, and so has the family. We better each other’s lives with CJ at the wheel. He never gives up on his family, and that is why people stick with it. He WILL transform your mind, body, and spirit.”

I have spent most of my life as an active person. I enjoy athletic activities and even as I moved into my 40’s, I continued to stay active. Yet with all this, I found that I had developed a certain laziness in my routines. I would go to the gym, but never lift, just do a bit of cardio. My eating habits were pretty bad, and I struggled constantly with getting to a weight and shape that I wanted to see. When I had the opportunity to take part in a 6 week trial program with Appenzeller Training Systems, I thought it would be fun but I fully expected to do 6 weeks and then stop.

What I found was that it was totally different than what I thought. CJ made the training more personal and focused than I would have imagined. He invested in each session and each person training, pushing them to better themselves without belittling them. But the thing I have found the most helpful is that you are not doing this alone. Going to the gym and pushing yourself when you are by yourself is extremely difficult. But at ATS, you know you always have other guys around who are pushing themselves and encouraging you to do the same. It has made all the difference. There is something about that family atmosphere that keeps me coming back. It is now 8 months and I am loving it. I am not only stronger and more flexible, but I have also learned more about eating right, treating my body properly, and while I am not to my final goal, I am certainly on track to get where I want to be.

CJ and ATS have impressed me and I believe it is beneficial to anyone willing to make the commitment. As CJ constantly says, “There’s nothing wrong with being strong.”
